irrational

I have but one small commentary on Blue Velvet, I just really like it. I love strange things though. Is it possible to just really like something without reason? I think perhaps it's a bit like falling in love if you believe in such things. There really is no reason to just really adoring a piece of literature just because of the way it proverbially smiles from across the room. I don't feel as if I should have to rationalize something I like. Like isn't rational. Sometimes you just have to say "Fuck you society. I like this movie and someone else out there does too, because someone created it with enough care for its publication".

  2. I have to agree with you. I think that brings back the old saying "Art for Art's sake." Some of the representational ideas that can be pulled from any text (whether it be film, literature, music, a Cindy Sherman photograph..) can be beneficial. [Beneficial in the sense that I think it is important for people to look at things with a new angle, a new sense, a new appreciation.] But it does get tedious and boring after analyzing everything that comes your way. Personally, when I have to dissect every part of a text, my enjoyment of it recedes and I end up annoyed by it.

Basically- if you want to like something purely for what it is- that's okay. If you want to dig into it and pull tons of observations from it and analyze it to no end- that's okay too.
